The Number Option

The Number field contains the fleet number or name of the subject of the photograph. There are a large number of different numbering systems in use by the railways of the world, so it is not really feasible to give all-embracing guidelines. If your search is not successful you should check that you are entering the number in the correct format. For example, modern British locomotives have an embedded space within the number, so a search for 73 142 would succeed, whereas one for 73142 would not. Unlike the Country, Operator and Item fields, you may enter a search criterion which might form only part of the field. Bear in mind, though, that by searching, say, on a single digit you are likely to get many other numbers which also match, simply because they contain that digit.
