About Image References

Each image in the collection has an 18 character unique Image Reference, eg 1959FEB03RWBR006cs. It comprises:
  • Nine characters which are the date the photograph was taken, in format year month day eg 1959FEB03
  • Where the date is not know, an approximate year is shown, followed by dummy reference XXX00
  • Four letters which identify the photographer eg RWBR (R.W. Bridger)
  • Three digits which are the progressive image number for that photographer for that date. Numbers below 100 have leading zero characters eg 006, 057.
  • Two letters which denote the medium eg cs indicates colour slide, mp indicates monochrome print etc.

The 18 character string should contain no spaces.

On the "Display An Image" page where an Image Reference is entered, the input box is exactly 18 characters long, so the reference keyed in (or pasted) should just fit.
